A Young Rory McIlroy Chips Golf Balls Into His Mums Washing Machine

2011 US Open Champion Rory McIlroy has had his sights on being a professional golfer and champion ever since he was a wee little lad in Northern Ireland. We have all seen the footage of Tiger Woods on the Michael Douglas Show but now we have footage of Rory before he became a household name in the golfing community and beyond.

This spot was taken shortly after he won an under 10 tournament circa 1999 at Doral Country Club which is located in my old stomping grounds of Miami Florida. Rory's attitude hasn't changed since the time this interview was conducted. His hair is a lot longer, and he has grown taller, but his enthusiasm for the game has always been there.

In my last post, I talked about how "he gets it". He understands how to be appreciative of everything he has. This is seen even at this tender age as he gives his Dad his medal for skipping an important dinner in order to see his son play. If you were not a Rory fan before, you certainly will be after watching this piece. How could you not? Have a great round and always hit your target.

Rory!!!Rory!!!Rory!!!

It seems that this chant is all that could be heard during the final round of the 111th playing of the US Open held at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda Maryland. Rory McIlroy destroyed a field that boasted some of the most talented golfers on the planet. Sure, Tiger Woods was not present due to injury, but would that have made a difference? I think not.

McIlroy set or tied twelve US Open records as he decimated the rest of the field. His closest competitor, Jason Day, finished eight strokes back and recorded his second straight, second place finish in consecutive majors. Going into the last round, there was no doubt that McIlroy would win the tournament. It was just a matter of by how many strokes he would win by.

I am a huge fan of Rory. We often hear analysts say that "he gets it".  He understands the game of golf, how to act on the course, and seems to appreciate everything that golf is giving him as a result of his hard work. He never gets too high or too low. He simply goes about his business and takes what the course gives him.

There were some who were still skeptical of whether or not he would be able to close it out after what happened at The Masters. After playing brilliantly for three rounds, his final round 80 at Augusta, put him out of contention for his first major win and the coveted green jacket.

As he said in the interviews following his win this past weekend, he learned a lot about himself after the meltdown in Augusta. This is what makes Rory special. Despite the fact that he is only 22 years old, he is proving himself wise beyond his years. He is poised to do great things and some have already started to talk about him breaking Jack Nickaus' record of winning eighteen majors.

This is McIlroy's first major and he has a long way to go before eclipsing Jack's lofty mark, but all the signs are there that he might be the one to do it. Will he do it? Who knows. But he probably isn't even thinking about that yet. For now, I'm sure is just anxious to get back home to Northern Ireland and present his fellow countrymen with their second consecutive U.S. Open championship.

Hats off to Rory McIlroy. The sky is the limit for this very talented athlete. As long as he keeps a level head, I see no reason why he couldn't win many more majors. At the very least, we will probably see a lot more Rory wigs at the tournaments he competes in. Have a great round and always hit your target.

Ben Crane Takes Out Rory McIlroy And Makes Funny Videos

Posted by Dexter Francois | Posted in , , | Posted on Thursday, February 24, 2011

Ben Crane is hilarious and he is a good golfer as well. After two rounds, he made his way into the sweet 16 of the WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship being held at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Marana Arizona. The 10 seed defeated Australia's Adam Scott 4 and 2 yesterday and dismantled Rory Mcilroy today beating him 8 and 7. Still it seems no one is talking about him.

Crane has three championships under his belt with the most recent one coming in 2010 at the Farmer Insurance Open. As much as I like him as a golfer, the reason I am a fan is for his off the course antics.

Golf sometimes gets a reputation of being one of those stuck up sports. Most of my friends will not even watch a golf tournament because in their eyes, the golfers are boring and there isn't enough excitement to hold their attention.

Crane is someone who goes against common perception. He may not be the most flamboyant golfer during a tournament but he has plenty of personality. He made a couple of videos for his website and they have been featured on the Golf Channel and other golf blogs. Even my swing coach got in on the act.

It is refreshing to see someone with a little personality on the tour. Someone who is not afraid to make a fool of himself without regard to what other people think. In light of what has happened with Tiger Woods, it seems more so than ever, that golfers are careful of what they do and say in the public eye.

I just wish more golfers would just be themselves. Golf is a game played by ladies and gentleman, but that does not mean we have to be so serious all the time. I don't expect Crane to act like he does in the videos while on the course, but at least we know that he is not afraid to allow people to see him for who he really is...A good golfer who likes to have fun. Have a great round and always hit your target.

Rory McIlroy And I Agree...It Just Doesn't Fit Our Eye

I got to the scrimmage portion of my practice session and I was hitting the ball really well. That is until I got to the one hole that always gives me trouble. I can play this hole as short as 105 yards or I can move back to where I can play it to 165 yards.

When I play the hole short I have no problems. The tee box sets up so that it is a straight shot into the green. Two bunkers guard the green on either side and it falls off over the back to an area that is 7 feet below the green. Not too difficult from this position. I still have to make the shot but there is not much to think about. Just hit it straight.

Problems arise however when I move it back to the 165 yard range. From this distance I actually tee the ball up from the tee box that is going in the opposite direction. From this angle, the green is off to the right a little bit. For some reason I have trouble getting myself properly aligned from this position.

When I am practicing I always lay down a club like Ian Poulter does in this video. It really helps to get myself aiming down the right line. When I have the the club down, I have no problem hitting a shot to a target that is off to the right. The shaft is there so I just trust that I am properly aligned and make the shot.

If I have to hit the same shot without my alignment aid, I struggle mightily. I feel like my stance is too closed and I have trouble completing a proper one-piece takeaway. I come across my body and hit a humongous hook. It happens every time I get to that hole.

Maybe it became mental after a while, but I also believe that poor technique or actually not knowing what to do is the main contributor of my poor performance on this particular hole. When you have poor mechanics or lack of knowledge, there is no way you can be confident in what you are doing. Especially in a game where everything is a matter of inches.

I often hear professionals say that a certain hole doesn't fit their eye. This is what is happening to me. I just don't feel comfortable. Rory McIlroy has been in the news recently for thinking about skipping the Players Championship held at TPC Sawgrass. It is considered golf's 5th major, but the 21 year old star says he may not be there in 2011. This is what he said about Pete Dye's infamous layout...

"I don't like the course," McIlroy said on the eve of the Dubai World Championship, the final tournament of the European Tour season. "That's one of the reasons I'm undecided whether to play it or not.

"It's a Pete Dye course. It creates angles, a bit like Whistling Straits," he said. "He designed that course as well, where the tee boxes are sort of lining you up in the wrong direction. Visually it's very tough off the tee. It makes you feel uncomfortable because it looks like you've only got a little bit of fairway to hit but actually once you get up there, it's a little bit wider. It's just very demanding visually," added McIlroy.

That's how I would describe my hole. Visually demanding. The angle is just off enough to make me feel uncomfortable like McIlroy does at TPC Sawgrass and the bunker filled Whistling Straits.

I hope he decides to play because he makes tournaments more exciting. I walked with him for a few holes a couple of years ago at Doral for the CA-WGC Championship. Even as a teenager he handle the pressure well amidst his gallery which grew as his round progressed. People wanted to see the powerful swing of the Northern Irishman.

As for me, one of my practice segments tomorrow will be on my trouble hole. I can't run away from it. A shot like that will come up at some point during a round. If I can knock it out now, I will be more prepared when I stand over a similar shot when it counts. Back to the drawing board.

Have a great round and always hit your target.

A Few Happy Gilmore Swings Before Watching The PGA Championship

0

Posted by Dexter Francois | Posted in , , , , , | Posted on Monday, August 16, 2010

My Buddy Marc and I got in a round of golf yesterday at Miami Springs Golf & Country Club. We wanted to get out early before the South Florida heat could set in. I also wanted to be home in time to watch the final round of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Unfortunately we did not tee off until about 11:30 AM, so it was hot and I would have to miss part of the tournament(I did make it home in time to see the leaders finish the back nine).

I can play whenever. I've played in Arizona with temperatures soaring over 115 degrees. I just like to play. Give me lots of water and Gatorade and I am good to go. It takes a little coaxing to get Marc out in the heat, but once he is out there, he is as game as any.

Marc has really come along this summer. He has improved his chipping and pitching tremendously and he has a natural eye with his putter. If I can get him to practice more he could really develop a decent golf game.

In a prior post, I shared Marc and I attempting a tandem Happy Gilmore swing. I am obsessed with trying to perfect the swing. I even started a Facebook group dedicated to the Happy Gilmore swing. Members send in their own hilarious attempts or those that they find on Youtube. Some are excellent, some are okay, and some border on the ridiculous. The course was wide open so we decided to get some more footage on the 18th tee.

It is not as easy as it looks. It takes a tremendous amount of timing and coordination to pull off this shot. Even the young golf sensation Rory Mcilroy struggled when he tried it in front of the cameras.

Our feeble attempts were hilarious. Needless to say, we each needed multiple takes to pull it off. Well, I pulled it off(sorry Marc). Marc was not so successful. We ended up spending five minutes on the tee box filming ourselves acting like fools. Like I said it was hot and I guess no one else was crazy enough to be out there, so we had all the time we wanted.

Marc made me promise not to show this to the general public. I think he even tried to use the Jedi mind trick on me, but it makes for good viewing. So again. Sorry buddy. I'm sure he will get over it...I hope. Have a good round and always hit your target.

Marc's 1st Attempt - This is just a warm up. Yeeaahh...That's it.

Marc's 2nd Attempt - I think he tries to get under the ball and scoop it up. Never try to help the ball into the air. Let the club do the work. HA!

Marc's 3rd Attempt - Contact! But where did the ball go? Don't think we have to look very far.

My 1st Attempt - All I did was make myself dizzy. And...how do I hit the ground a foot behind the ball?

My 2nd Attempt - Success! Pushed it a little right, but I got it out there.
